I went into Bournemouth yesterday evening to watch the Xmas lights be turned on.
The square was packed with about 400 people, with an alpine bar, food stalls / a mini ski slope & climbing wall. Entertainment was courtesy of the local radio station, 2CR - a band doing acoustic covers (not bad), then a Robbie tribute, who looked like maybe Robbie will in 10 years time when he's eaten way too may pies.
I paid a stonking £3.50 for a limp hotdog (& had to pester the guy for more onions, he gave me so few), and listened in disbelif to him tell a girl that sausage & bacon in a little baguet would cost her £5!
Anyway, a poorly disguised Santa turned the lights on, and there were fireworks from on roof of Debehnams, directly in front of the square. That's where the fun begun.
The first fireworks were ones that go up a bit, then pop into 2 horizontal flares. Trouble was that they didn't go up very far before splitting, and rather than going straight up, went over the crowd! One in particular, bouncing down the roof of the alpine bar. Thankfully they mostly went out just before head hight, but the hot ash still landed in the crowd.
There were some others that were nice & 'fizzy', then some green fireballs. Again, rather than going up, these came stright down from the roof of debenhams (about 5 stories up), into the crowd! We all stood there firstly in disbeleif, then in panic, as we watched several green fireballs coming directly at us in quick succession!
There were only about 20 or so of them, so they stopped just as people really stated to panic, and it looked like there was going to be a stampede.
Thankfully nothing hit me or my mates, but some people must have been hit - as far as we could tell nobody was hurt, although as the fireworks ended (with a big bang that made everybody jump out of their skins), people just left, in shock and withouth any applause.
Of course the authorities can't be blamed for faulty fireworks, but really they should have stopped them after the first ones went wrong.
It's no fun watching a golfball sized fireball heading towards you at high speed I can tell you! It felt more like being in a war zone than in Bournemouth town centre. I could imagine parents with small children being particularly distressed / angered by this.
